KUALA LUMPUR:
Delicious and packed with flavours – these are among the reasons why Greek cuisine has won the hearts of so many people around the world.

Well, here’s some good news: now, you don’t have to hop on a flight to Athens! Mazi Greek Taverna offers diners an opportunity to savour scrumptious Greek fare right here in Kuala Lumpur.

Nestled in Bukit Tunku, it is hard not to be charmed by this establishment, which opened its doors in August. Warm lights and wicker chairs result in a cosy, comfortable and inviting ambience.

Both indoor and outdoor seating are available: the latter gives patrons a view of lush greenery, adding a serene touch to this delightful oasis in the city.

Speaking with FMT Lifestyle, founder Wong Yin-How shared that the word “mazi” means “a combination of flavourful dishes perfect for sharing”.

“It’s a very welcoming cuisine for all races and religions because pork is not a prominent ingredient in Greek food. It’s also very healthy,” said the 46-year-old.

The menu here is pork-free and all meats are halal certified. Alcohol, however, is served.

To kickstart your Greek gastronomic experience, the Spanakopita is a scrumptious choice. Crispy filo pastry encases a rich filling of spinach, feta and cream cheese, making each bite a tantalising combination of crunchy, soft and creamy.

If you are looking to share an appetiser, the dips platter is a lovely option. Soft, homemade pita bread is the perfect accompaniment to the refreshing tzatziki (a yoghurt and cucumber dip); creamy baba ganoush made with eggplant; hummus, and fava beans.

In the mood for some filling comfort food? The Moussaka will hit all the right spots. (Muhammad Rabbani Jamian @ FMT Lifestyle)

No visit to a Greek restaurant is complete with trying the Moussaka, and here, the classic dish is done right. A mouthwatering combination of baked eggplant, tomatoes, potatoes and tender minced beef, it is topped with a generous amount of creamy bechamel sauce and mozzarella cheese.

Each bite is rich and luxurious – and no, you won’t want to share it with anyone!

Meanwhile, seafood lovers will enjoy the Oktapodi: Spanish octopus grilled in a charcoal oven, which results in a sweet and tender meat with a pleasant smoky taste. The dish comes with potatoes, juicy tomatoes and chickpeas.

On to dessert! The Galaktoboureko is a favourite of Wong’s – one bite and it’s no surprise why. It’s a decadent combination of creamy, fragrant semolina custard on the inside and flaky filo pastry on the outside.

Served with a dollop of ice cream, it’s the perfect way to end your feast. But wait – don’t leave without enjoying a steaming cup of black coffee! Served in a moka pot, Mazi’s brew is strong, rich and fragrant.

The beans, Wong shared, are roasted at their sister restaurant, Smith Breads & Café.

Mazi also serves white and red wines, which, naturally, includes a selection of Greek vino. Other beverage options include beer, cocktails, mocktails, juices, and a variety of kombucha.

All in all, this is a lovely spot in KL where good food and good times await, so head on over for your Greek fix!
