KUALA LUMPUR:
An evening of rock anthems, soulful grooves, and slick showmanship by eight Malaysian headliners who have sung their way into the nation’s hearts is set to rock Melaka on Sept 3.

Concert promoter Jojo Events will be holding the first major live concert in Melaka since the implementation of pandemic restrictions in 2020, which will see five seasoned artistes performing alongside stars of the new generation.

Rocking the stage at the six-hour Konsert Rakyat Melaka will be “Papa Rock” Ramli Sarip and Malaysia’s Queen of Rock, Ella, who have proven they have what it takes to keep a loyal fanbase coming back for more, decade after decade.

Also taking centre stage will be 53-year-old band Alleycats, who, fronted by David Arumugam, are revered for their artistry and marathon endurance.

The A-listers further include crooners DJ Dave and Jamal Abdillah, whose durability in the local music scene has made them a part of Malaysian entertainment’s greatest success stories.

The concert will also showcase the best of current Malaysian talent and creativity. Besides the genre-blending talent of former “Malaysian Idol” winner Jaclyn Victor, the lineup includes retro rock band Kugiran Masdo, who whirl through classics with relish and write new songs in the same spirit, and the distinct soft musical style of husband-wife duo Syamel and Ernie.

Jojo Events owner Syed Mohd Yusof Syed Nasir said the artistes will each perform five of their songs, some backed by a 13-piece orchestra from Melaka Heritage Institute.

He said he was delighted to gather the icons under one roof in the state. “Their music will never be swept away by time and, in some ways, the concert is making history in historic Melaka.

“Besides being fun, it offers a host of economic and social benefits to communities. Further, such events foster community pride; strengthen love, unity and goodwill; and teach people new things,” Syed Mohd Yusof said.

He added that the success of the concert would encourage him to make it an annual event in Melaka’s tourism, culture and entertainment calendar.

Konsert Rakyat Melaka, which runs from 6pm until midnight at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC Melaka), is held to celebrate the 73rd birthday of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Mohd Ali Rustam. Tickets, priced between RM50 and RM100, are on sale through RedTix.
