Originally built as residence for a senior military official and his family, the house on Jalan Abdullah here has also been a church hostel, and a bed and breakfast.
In 2019 the building became home to Bunglow37, a restaurant known for its modern European cuisine with an Asian influence.
More recently, it partnered with artisan bakery Der Backmeister on a unique business arrangement. The two establishments now operate from the same location, with the German bakehouse and café serving customers from morning until early evening, and Bunglow37 taking over after.
The switch not only includes a change in servers and kitchen staff; the décor is also altered. Every day at 5pm, signboards and racks for Der Backmeister are taken down and replaced with those for Bunglow37.

Der Backmeister
Der Backmeister set up shop in Bunglow37 last October, and although it has only been a few months, the café has been a big hit among regular visitors there.
The eatery, which also has branches in Ampang and Taman Tun Dr Ismail, is unlike any other: its menu is completely halal-certified and uses only natural ingredients, with no premixes, preservatives or any other additives.

Der Backmeister’s fresh and healthy breads and pastries are baked to perfection. Among its bestsellers are brezels, which is German for pretzels. Remember to come early as they sell out fast!
Also popular is the Bavarian Sausage Bayerische Weisswurst, which comes with two sausages, a brezel, and traditional sweet-and-tangy mustard. This dish is best eaten by combining the right amount of sausage, mustard and brezel in one bite.
Der Backmeister offers more than just baked goodies – it also serves sandwiches, burgers, and pasta, and the meatloaf, in particular, comes highly recommended. Tender and moist meat between fluffy bread paired with two different mustards makes for the perfect brunch meal.
One can enjoy Der Backmeister’s delicious fare and variety of hot and cold drinks on the terrace while taking in the beautiful view of Bangsar.

Bunglow37
For a delightful appetiser, Bunglow37’s pumpkin soup is a must-try with its rich flavours that will warm your heart and tummy.
Another delectable option is the Salmon Crudo: fresh fish paired perfectly with shoyu, basil oil, citrus and pistachio.
Bunglow37 is known for its tapas, especially the garlic prawns – juicy crustaceans steeped in garlic spiced oil. For vegetarians, the sauteed button mushrooms are served in a creamy butter garlic sauce with sliced bread.

For mains, you can’t go wrong with the pan-seared grouper. It is served with sauteed greens, capers, shoyu, burnt butter and crispy soybean skin, the latter of which perfectly complements the soft, moist flesh of the fresh fish.
Bunglow37 also serves a variety of pastas. Its crab tuna linguine is a must-try, especially for those who like a little heat.

For a palate cleanser, try the Japanese cultured milk sorbet, which has just the right amount of sweetness and comes with earl grey tea jelly, longan and ginger flower.
Or for a richer dessert, the Chocolate Cremeux is thick and creamy – the perfect sweet end to a wonderful meal.
Bunglow37 also has rooms for private dining, parties, and corporate events. So head on over to experience delicious baked goods by day and exquisite dishes by night!
