Tenaganita reported that trafficked women and children, as well as sex workers, had suffered severe injuries from abuse and torture “inspired” by the erotic movie.
Tenaganita executive director Glorene Das revealed today that demand for explicit torture had risen since the movie was released, and women and children had become the victims.
“Trafficked women and children, as well as sex workers, suffer traumatic brain injuries at rates as high as torture survivors.
“They are often burned with cigarettes, slashed with razor blades, anally and vaginally raped, tied up, punched, kicked and regularly murdered.”
She said followers of “Fifty Shades of Grey” seem to see all this as a form of pleasure and the demand has grown.
She said her heart was heavy for the women and children whose sexual abuse was caused by this film.
“One should care about the stories that are being told through films and other forms of media as these stories shape our ideas and values,” Glorene said in a statement today.
She said Tenaganita had recently rescued a victim who underwent such abuse. The perpetrators had abused and tortured her using what had been explicitly spelled out in the book and shown in the movie, she alleged.
“All her perpetrators (almost 10 to 15 per night), for almost five months, were hyper-controlling, bullish, volatile, caustic, narcissistic, manipulative and fixated on inflicting pain, humiliation and degradation on another human being – much like the main character of the book/movie Christian Grey,” Glorene said.
She then urged people to talk about the impact of such movies on others who are vulnerable, such as women and children, and who have been made victims.
“Boycott all that promote abuses, torture and violence. These experiences, combined with interviews of numerous people immersed in this world, have led me to the undeniable conclusion that this movie/novel is not some erotic thrill, but is about the desecration of humanity,” she said.
“50 Shades of Grey” is an erotic romance bestseller that was made into a movie in mid-2015. Its author, E. L. James, announced last month that work on the prequel, “Fifty Shades Darker”, had already begun.
