PETALING JAYA:
A Malaysian man was charged in a Singapore court today for the murder of a cleaner at the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal last month, Today Online reported.

Ahmad Muin Yaacob, 23, who was arrested in Malaysia on Sunday, is alleged to have killed the 54-year-old cleaner, Maimunah Awang, at the ferry terminal on Nov 24.

Earlier today, Bernama reported that Muin was caught after Malaysian police acted on a request from their Singapore counterparts, based on a warrant of arrest issued by the State Courts in Singapore.

He was handed to Singapore police on Monday.

A statement on the Singapore police website provided the details of the suspect’s arrest, and thanked the Malaysian police for “their utmost support” in the case.

According to the facts of the case, the victim was found in a drain, with neck injuries and bruises on her stomach. Police are still investigating if robbery was a motive as the victim’s gold jewellery was reportedly missing.

According to the Singapore daily, Muin will be remanded for a week as police carry out further investigations.

In Singapore, like in Malaysia, a murder conviction carries the death penalty.
