Fireworks explosion: 2 Klang council officials charged

The botched fireworks display caused 15 people to be injured at this year's New Year Eve celebration.

Two Klang Municipal Council (MPK) staff members were charged in separate Magistrate’s Courts here today over a botched fireworks display, which injured 15 people during a New Year’s Eve celebration.

MPK administrative assistant Mohd Nizam Saad, 32, pleaded not guilty before magistrate Mariam Maran Abdullah to a charge of causing hurt by endangering the lives or personal safety of others when the fireworks was launched.

In the court before magistrate Ahmad Feisal Mohd Azmi, MPK corporate and social department director Zaireezal Ahmad Zainuddin, 41, pleaded not guilty to the charge of abetting Nizam by allegedly instructing him to light the fireworks.

They were charged with committing the offence at the Pandamaran Sports Complex field at 12.01am on Jan 1 this year.

The charges against them were made under Section 337 of the Penal Code and Section 109 of the same law respectively.

These provide imprisonment for up to six months, or a fine of up to RM1,000, or both, if found guilty.

Deputy public prosecutors Aliah Atiqah Razali and Amira Abd Aziz prosecuted while lawyer V Ayasamy represented Zaireezal and Mohd Nizam.

Nizam’s case was fixed for mention on April 20 and Zaireezal’s on April 11.
