PUTRAJAYA:
On his first official day at work as the seventh prime minister of Malaysia, Dr Mahathir Mohamad took questions from reporters at the Perdana Leadership Foundation.

On the future of Attorney-General, Apandi Ali:
“The AG will go on leave and the solicitor-general can deputise for him. The solicitor-general can also replace him on the pardons board as well.

On investigating and removing Apandi:
“Police reports must be made before an investigation can be carried out against him. We need a basis for an investigation and not merely based on accusations. If he is investigated, only then can he be suspended.”

On Umno joining Pakatan Harapan:
Mahathir shot down the suggestion, and said the court will have to decide on Umno’s legal status. “And after that, it is up to the Registrar of Societies.”

On naming Lim Guan Eng as finance minister despite corruption charge:
“We just named him, he has not being sworn in as the minister.

“We have a panel to look into the Ministry of Finance’s work. What we can carry out, we will, but until then we will wait for the minister to be appointed.”

On Anwar Ibrahim’s impending freedom:
“We are trying to get a royal pardon for him.”

On pursuing controversial businessman Low Taek Jho:
The government has not sought Interpol’s help to catch him. “But we roughly know where he is.”

On speculation that the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) will be dismantled:
“We haven’t discussed that yet.”

On resignation of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief Dzulkifli Ahmad:
“He resigned by choice. It was his decision to make. If any investigation against him reveals anything, then we can take action.”

On naming the rest of Cabinet members:
The core Cabinet will include 10 ministers. “After that, the remaining 15 will be appointed as soon as possible.”

On investigating alleged wrongdoings by the previous government:
All government ministries have been instructed that no documents could be taken out or destroyed.
