TOKYO: Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said he was willing to serve as prime minister for as long as the people want him to.
“But of course, I don’t know how long I myself will last,” he said, adding that he would be 95 in two years’ time.
Speaking at the Nikkei conference in Tokyo, Mahathir said he was already the oldest prime minister in the world.
“It will be a record if I reach 95 and am still prime minister,” he added.
“If that’s what the people want me to do, I’ll accede to their wishes.”
Mahathir was sworn in as prime minister for the second time last month after leading his Pakatan Harapan coalition to a stunning election victory on May 9.
He was previously prime minister from 1981 to 2003.
