Najib disappointed PAC probe on 1MDB suspended

The former prime minister says he was looking forward to the investigations to clear his name.

Former prime minister Najib Razak says he has given many explanations on the allegations against him.
PETALING JAYA:
Former prime minister Najib Razak says he is disappointed that the Public Accounts Committee has suspended its inquiry into the 1MDB issue pending the disposal of court cases involving the state investment fund.

“Over the past few months, I have made many postings, complete with documents and explained in interviews regarding the 1MDB issue,” he told FMT.

“I have explained how 1MDB has helped with the lop-sided Independent Power Producers (IPP), how much assets 1MDB had, such as Bandar Malaysia, and how it had contributed to the economy through projects such as the eight military bases and the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX).”

Najib said he also explained how the Barisan Nasional government he led had already signed settlement agreements with the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) to recover money that allegedly went missing.

He said he also spoke on why the 1MDB issue needed to be solved amicably, so as to protect Malaysia’s diplomatic relationships with the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

IPIC is a UAE state-owned enterprise while Saudi Arabia’s Prince Turki Abdullah,  co-founded PetroSaudi International.

“I had looked forward to the PAC inquiry to provide all this information and tell my side of the story to clear my name as soon as possible,” said Najib, who along with his wife Rosmah Mansor, have been charged, among others, with criminal breach of trust and money laundering linked to 1MDB and former 1MDB subsidiary, SRC International.

“Therefore, I am disappointed that the PAC has indefinitely suspended their inquiry into 1MDB pending the court cases against me since these cases may take some time to resolve.”

Earlier today, PAC chairman Ronald Kiandee said investigations into 1MDB will be suspended until the courts have ruled on cases linked to the state investment fund.

“Even though a motion was approved by the Dewan Rakyat for investigations to be re-opened, it has to be postponed because of the court cases. This is our stand,” he was quoted as saying.

The Beluran MP also said that he had informed Speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof of the decision.

In August, the PAC and the auditor-general (A-G) agreed to reopen investigations into 1MDB.
