Single mum jailed 5 years for siphoning off RM1.3 mil from telco

The mother of five pleaded guilty to not crediting the daily collections into the company's accounts.

KUALA LUMPUR: A single mother will serve a five-year jail sentence after pleading guilty to two charges of criminal breach of trust (CBT) in the daily collection of a telecommunications company, amounting to RM1.29 million, last year.

Sessions Court judge Zamri Bakar sentenced Asmira Ariffin, 42, to five years’ jail for each of the charges but ordered the sentences to run concurrently starting today.

Asmira was the collection department manager at the U-Mobile branch at Berjaya Times Square in Jalan Imbi and her duty was to ensure the money was credited into the company’s accounts.

According to the first and second charges, she committed CBT involving RM720,005.40 and RM570,753.50 respectively.

All the offences were committed between Aug 18, 2015, and April 21, 2017.

The offences come under Section 408 of the Penal Code, which carries a minimum jail of one year and a maximum jail of 14 years, with caning and a fine.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Norashikin Ibrahim urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence.

Counsel for Asmira, Zulkefli Omar, applied for a lighter sentence as she did not have any previous records.

“My client is a single mother with five children, aged between 10 and 18. She has realised her mistake and has promised not to repeat the offence,” he said.

According to the facts of the case, the U-Mobile corporate services director at Berjaya Times Square lodged a police report after an internal probe found discrepancies in the company’s billing report.

From further investigations, it was found that from August 2015 to April 2017, a sum of RM1,290,758, from the collection at the Berjaya Times Square U-Mobile service centre, had not been credited into the company’s accounts.
