GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government administration complex of Komtar was evacuated today after heavy smoke was detected coming from an unoccupied unit on the third floor which is the lobby of the state government offices.
According to a civil servant who works in the building, the entire floor is off-limits as firemen are working to put out the blaze.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and his state executive council members were forced to leave midway through their exco meeting to evacuate the building along with hundreds of others.
An officer at the Beach Street fire department told FMT that an emergency call was made at 2.50pm and a fire engine arrived nine minutes later.
The officer said no fatalities or injuries were reported at the time.
