PETALING JAYA:
PKR president Anwar Ibrahim today maintained that his party is heading in “the right direction” despite claims of factions within the Pakatan Harapan component following the gay sex video controversy implicating his deputy Mohamed Azmin Ali.

He acknowledged discontent among some members over certain issues affecting the party but said he did not see any “real problems”.

“They consider that, but I think the party is moving in the right direction,” he said, adding however that “of course it’s not 100%”.

“I’m a democrat, people can come and discuss,” he told reporters after delivering the keynote address at an anti-corruption forum organised by the International Strategy Institute.

PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin, a staunch supporter of Azmin, had said in July that there were cracks in the party although she spoke of these as differing “schools of thought”.

She also blamed outside factors for making them worse.

On whether action would be taken against certain PKR leaders who have been said to be absent from bureau meetings, Anwar said the meeting last night was “very well attended”.

“Of course, I have given my advice that leaders must attend, but last night (the meeting) was very well attended.

“Vice-president Xavier Jayakumar was there, Tian Chua was there, Baru Bian was there, Ali Biju was there. The vast majority was there,” he said.

He added that Azmin, who has reportedly been missing from PKR bureau meetings, had been unable to attend as he was overseas.

On a separate matter, he reiterated that he has no interest in a Cabinet position at the moment.

“The understanding was clearly that we should allow Mahathir to be prime minister and Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to be deputy, and that I would only assume premiership at the right time.

“I think that I have not placed any interest or desire in joining the Cabinet because I think Mahathir should be given space to conduct his affairs.

“Why can’t I wait for a while? Whatever assistance is required, I will be ready to serve,” he said.
