Only 6 new cases as 45 recover from Covid-19

No new deaths recorded.

PUTRAJAYA:
Recoveries continue to outpace new Covid-19 cases, with 45 patients discharged compared to six new cases recorded, the health ministry revealed this evening.

To date, a total of 8,231 patients have recovered.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the six new cases — which pushes the total to 8,596 — four were local transmissions involving Malaysians, namely three in Selangor and one in Sarawak.

The remaining two were imported cases, involving one foreigner.

There are 244 active cases now.

Noor Hisham also said two patients are being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU).

No new Covid-19-related deaths were reported, which sees the death toll remain at 121.

Noor Hisham revealed that two Malaysians who returned from Mexico and India had tested positive to Covid-19.

To date, 55,056 foreigners have been screened and 2,554 of them had tested positive.

Meanwhile, Noor Hisham said if any infections were detected at social events, the ministry will order for the hotel or restaurant to be closed.

“So we will allow for social functions but will monitor for positive cases or new clusters and take appropriate action if detected.”

Noor Hisham said this when asked to comment on the government’s decision to allow social events such as wedding ceremonies, kenduris, or birthday or anniversary celebrations from July 1.

Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob had announced this today but said there will be a time limit of five hours for each event, with a maximum of 250 people, subject to the size of the venue.

Zero Covid-19 cases possible by mid-July

Noor Hisham said the nation could record zero Covid-19 cases by mid-July if the standard operating procedures were adhered to strictly.

He said this was based on the country’s success in flattening the curve despite the implementation of the conditional movement control order (CMCO) and the recovery MCO, which saw restrictions relaxed.

“Even after the Aidilfitri celebrations and 14 days after the CMCO, the cases did not surge.

“In fact, we recorded single-digit cases, while the daily cases were under control.”
