Selangor police confirmed tonight that a man, aged 24, had been arrested while making a Facebook live video broadcast while a CID unit was conducting a raid on a house in Petaling Jaya. They did not identify him.
“After a warning was given and ignored, the police arrested the man and confiscated the mobile phone from the man for obstructing the duties of public servants, and he was taken to Petaling Jaya district headquarters for further action and investigation,” the statement said.
A member of the Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany) said Wong had been arrested for obstructing the police and was being held for questioning overnight.
“He was merely recording a video of the police who were about to search the home of Robin Yap Wen Qing. Around 8.50pm, the police said that Wong will be detained overnight and will only be released tomorrow,” the Umany member said.
Wong, a former Umany president, was detained after police went to Yap’s home as part of investigations on alleged sedition and misuse of network facilities regarding an Umany statement on the role of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The current Umany president, Yap, and vice-president Tan Li Yuan are being investigated over an article entitled “Yang di-Pertuan Agong should not intervene in national affairs” which was published on the group’s Facebook page last week.
