Top Glove workers scaling fence a non-issue, say cops

Selangor police say the workers had gone to a grocery store which was still within the EMCO zone.

The viral photo showing Top Glove workers climbing the fence around their dormitory is causing concern among people in the area.
SHAH ALAM:
Selangor police tonight called for calm following reports that Top Glove workers had scaled a fence of a dormitory currently under the enhanced movement control order (EMCO).

The Selangor police’s Covid-19 spokesman Muhammad Yazid Muhammad Yew said it was a non-issue, Bernama reported.

He added that the workers had simply gone to purchase necessities from a makeshift grocery store that is within the locality under the EMCO.

“The incident isn’t an issue because the grocery store is within the EMCO area,” he was quoted as saying by the national news agency.

Yazid also said the Klang Municipal Council had also taken action against the grocery store owner for operating without a licence.

He went on to urge the public not to panic over the incident as security in the EMCO area was still under control.

The EMCO at the Top Glove workers’ dormitory, first announced on Nov 17 has been extended till Dec 14 following a rise in Covid-19 cases involving the Teratai cluster.

On a separate matter, Yazid also confirmed that police received a report from Top Glove yesterday on a viral video allegedly showing the authorities assaulting a company worker.

“The case is still being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code,” he said.
