79 schools in Selangor closed for 2 days after spike in Covid-19 cases

They include several in the Petaling district, Hulu Langat and Klang.

The health ministry had reported 49 active clusters in the education sector in Selangor recently.
PETALING JAYA:
A total of 79 schools in Selangor have been ordered to close today and tomorrow after Covid-19 cases were reported.

A circular from the Selangor Education Department said the closure will affect 19 schools in Hulu Langat, 18 in Petaling Perdana and 15 in Klang.

Nine schools in Gombak have also been ordered to close, nine in Petaling Utama, two in Sepang, five in Hulu Selangor and two in Kuala Langat.

This follows a spike in Covid-19 clusters involving schools and education centres reported by the health ministry recently.

Previously, the ministry had said there were 49 active clusters and 2,617 active cases involving the education sector.

Meanwhile, Klang MP Charles Santiago urged the education ministry to be more transparent as he has been told by some schools that only about 20% of students are attending school.

“I have also been told that the toilets are not cleaned properly in schools.

“This could be one of the major sources where students contract Covid-19,” he said.

He also urged schools to stop using air-conditioners during lessons, as most science laboratories, staff rooms and libraries are air -conditioned.

Umno Supreme Council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi has also criticised education minister Radzi Jidin for not being proactive in the management of Covid-19 cases in schools.

He said Radzi seemed to be keeping mum despite the worrying spike involving the education sector.

“The most critical is how he is managing schools during Covid-19. He is not proactive and there is no effective planning” he said in a Facebook post.
