Disproportionate vaccine supply unfair, says Selangor ruler

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah says he is shocked the state had only received 615,210 doses as at June 1.

PETALING JAYA:
The vaccine allocation for Selangor is disproportionate and unfair, the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, said.

He said that with a population of 6.5 million, he was shocked to hear the Covid-19 immunisation task force reveal that only 615,210 doses had made it to the state, and not 2.9 million as reported before.

A statement by his private secretary, Mohamad Munir Bani, today said Sultan Sharafuddin stated that with Selangor being the largest contributor to the country’s gross domestic product, it is important that priority is given to the state.

He said the Sultan called on the Special Committee On Covid-19 Vaccine Supply to expedite the administration of vaccines in Selangor.

This could be achieved, he said, by opening more vaccination centres, particularly in rural parts of the state.

He also suggested that more drive-through vaccination centres be opened and mobile clinics be deployed.

To those who have already been vaccinated, he preached vigilance in continuing to follow SOPs, such as observing social distancing, wearing a mask and only leaving the house when necessary.

He also praised the efforts by the Selangor state government in ramping up mass testing.

The Sultan also expressed his disappointment at the existence of anti-vaxxer groups in the state, and said he hoped people would not be influenced by such a “distorted understanding” of vaccines, as it can save lives and protect the community.

He added that he was worried it would be difficult to achieve herd immunity if these groups remained steadfast against the vaccine.
