PETALING JAYA:
Several opposition MPs and prominent activists have lodged a police report against health minister Dr Adham Baba and other relevant ministries for their failure in managing the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

This comes in the wake of Malaysia expecting to breach the million-mark of Covid-19 cases when the numbers are announced later today.

Among those who lodged the report were activists Ambiga Sreenevasan and Marina Mahathir, Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil, Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh, Klang MP Charles Santiago, Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah, Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii and Sepanggar MP Azis Jamman.

In a live press conference after the report at Pantai police station in Kuala Lumpur, Ambiga said the report was made under Section 269 of the Penal Code for a negligent act that could spread infectious diseases and Section 304A for a negligent act causing death, not amounting to culpable homicide.

“We decided to do this because we believe there must be accountability from the government in handling the pandemic,” she said.

They said there were several failures by these individuals and ministries in managing the pandemic, namely insufficient testing, lack of resources for the public healthcare facilities, failure to share granular data, and unfair treatment of refugees and migrant workers, among others.

“There is no synchronisation between the state and the federal governments in implementing SOPs, especially for Sabah,” said Warisan MP Azis.

They claimed these failures are the reasons that have caused the steep spike in Covid-19 cases and deaths in Malaysia.

With the record-high cases breaching the 15,000 mark twice over the past week, a total of 90,542 infections were reported between July 18 and July 24. Total infections now stand at 996,393.

Meanwhile, the past week saw 1,036 deaths reported, taking the toll to 7,902.
