Speaking to Berita Harian, Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said Bukit Aman has yet to decide whether to purchase the five BMW M3 and Volkswagen Tiguan vehicles received yesterday.
“Right now, the police are only using the vehicles on a trial basis for two weeks without any agreements (to purchase them),” he said.
“We are doing this to gather feedback on whether these vehicles are suitable for police assignments.”
Photos of the five luxury vehicles – which are equipped with police detailing – were widely spread on social media yesterday, with some netizens claiming they were movie props.
Meanwhile, Bukit Aman security and public order department director Hazani Ghazali said the vehicles would be used by his department as well as the traffic investigation and enforcement department (JSPT) and police escorts.
Stressing that police are aware of the financial constraints the government is facing due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Hazani said the vehicle distributors only offered the vehicles to police for testing purposes.
“I would like to clarify here that the use of these vehicles is for a trial, or proof of concept, for a period of two weeks … no purchases have been made,” he said in the same report.
“We will test these vehicles first before then deciding if we want to use them.”
