KOTA KINABALU:
Warisan vice-president Peter Anthony has announced that he is quitting to form a new party friendly to Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).

Details on the new Kadazan Dusun Murut (KDM) party are expected to be revealed soon.

Juil Nuatim, another Warisan assemblyman, is also expected to quit the party.

Speaking at a press conference at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport on his return from Kuala Lumpur today, Peter said he left Warisan as the party has strayed from its true path, which is to fight for the people of Sabah.

Aside from that, he said, the reason behind him setting up a party friendly to GRS was to reduce political conflicts in Sabah.

“We want to uphold the dignity of the people of Sabah, especially the KDM community who still need our help.

“Most Sabah voters want a local party but Warisan has entered Kuala Lumpur and that is one of the reasons why I left Warisan.

“We must also reduce political conflicts and jointly develop the state.”

He was greeted by about 100 supporters when he arrived at KKIA.

Peter, who is the president of NGO KDM Malaysia, also said the new party would be launched in January.

Meanwhile, Juil confirmed his exit from Warisan but has yet to decide whether to join the new party

“Yes, (I have left Warisan) and I am here today also as the deputy president (of KDM Malaysia) to give support to my president (Peter).

“As for the new party, I have not joined it yet and will decide on it later,” he said.

With the departure of Peter and Juil from Warisan, the party is now left with 17 state seats.

Previously, Warisan had 23 state seats after the last general election but Bugaya assemblyman Manis Muka Mohd Darah died in November last year.

After that, three other assemblymen – Yusof Yacob, Mohamaddin Ketapi and Hassan A Gani Pg Amir – left the party.

All of them initially announced their exit from Warisan to become independent assemblymen friendly to GRS.

However, Hassan and Mohamaddin later announced they would join Bersatu while Yusof has remained an independent.
