PETALING JAYA:
PAS and Bersatu today announced that they will contest the Johor polls under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) banner.

The two main PN component parties issued a pledge announcing their renewed vow to work together.

The move also comes amid strained ties between PAS and Umno.

The one-page pledge was shared by PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin’s aide with the press.

At a press conference later, Muhyiddin said the accord struck between PAS and Bersatu was historic as it determined the political direction both parties would be taking.

He said PN will use the same strategy as it did in Melaka in fielding candidates for the upcoming Johor polls.

“There will be a mix of youths, women and experienced hopefuls,” he said.

Muhyiddin added that while he remains cognizant of the coalition’s huge loss in Melaka, the scenario in Johor was vastly different.

“We have the right strategy to win. We know what to do, some of which are affirmed in our resolution (with PAS),” he said.

Muhyiddin said the allocation of seats among component parties will be decided in the next few days.

In a copy of the “Muzakarah” resolution given to the press, both PAS and Bersatu vowed to strengthen the coalition on the principle of mutual trust and equal partnership.

The parties also agreed to work towards winning the support of fence-sitters and young voters through effective branding and clear messaging.

They also expressed “regret over the strategies by certain parties” that were contrary to the spirit of fostering unity among different groups, thus affecting the country’s political stability.

“We also affirm that PAS and Bersatu’s support for the federal government is conditional. It must be respected, remain consultative in nature and one that is based on integrity, anti-corruption and the welfare of the people.”

PN comprises Bersatu, PAS and Gerakan in the peninsula.

The coalition had earlier announced that it will be contesting all 56 seats in the Johor polls.

PN fared badly in the Melaka state polls where it only won two seats last November. The Umno-led BN won comfortably to form the state government.
