MACC probes claims of abuse of power in Mara unit

This comes a day after Mara denied allegations posted online by the Twitter account, Edisi Khas.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission will probe claims of abuse of power in Mara’s investment company Mara Corporation Sdn Bhd.
PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is looking into a complaint on abuse of power and mismanagement by senior officials of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), just a day after Mara denied allegations about its investment arm Mara Corporation Sdn Bhd.

A document was posted yesterday by “whistleblower” Twitter account Edisi Khas setting out alleged “backdated” payments to certain Mara officers without the knowledge of the top management of Mara Corporation.

In a statement today, MACC said it had received a complaint on the matter and will begin its probe on Monday by calling up several witnesses from Mara Corporation to give their statements.

The investigation will be conducted under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act which deals with using one’s position to seek gratification, whether for themselves, a relative or an associate.

MACC said it viewed the allegations against Mara’s integrity very seriously, while noting that the matter was being investigated internally by the agency.

Yesterday, Mara chairman Azizah Mohd Dun denied claims of mismanagement, and said investigations had been initiated into Mara Corporation to review the related documents and to ensure the company was managed properly.

Azizah, who is MP for Beaufort, said that all of Mara’s subsidiaries were regulated under the Companies Act 2016 and that it would never protect any guilty parties if any wrong had been committed.

The corporation came under the spotlight after images of a letter, allegedly from executive director Suhaili Abdul Rahman to Azizah, were posted online.

The letter highlighted alleged wrongdoings of five Mara officers, who were named in the 17-page letter, which was said to have been written at her request for an integrity enquiry into Mara officers who had been “loaned” to Mara Corporation in a cross fertilisation programme.

The letter contained a list of “backdated” payments that they allegedly received. According to the letter, Suhaili said the backdated payments were done without his knowledge or that of the board of directors.
