Amid floods, TNB shuts down 40 substations in KL

The electricity company says efforts are under way to restore supply in stages.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has shut down 40 substations in Kuala Lumpur to ensure the safety of customers after flash floods hit the city today.

TNB said efforts were under way to ensure that electricity supply in the affected areas are restored in stages, depending on local conditions.

“If the floods worsen, supply will be shut off at the affected substation to ensure the safety of local consumers,” it said.

The affected areas include Royal Cendana, Bukit Aman, Class G Qrt, Bukit Aman police headquarters, Tanglin hospital, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya health departments, Jalan Kebun Bunga, the Selangor town and country planning department, Banyan Tree Signature in Jalan Conlay, the Royale Chulan Hotel and Menara Worldwide, among others.

The national InfoBanjir website showed rivers in Kedah, Selangor and Johor having exceeded the danger levels.

The water level at Sungai Anak Bukit in Kota Setar, Kedah, showed a reading of 2.13m, exceeding the 1.70m normal level.

In Selangor, Sungai Kuang in Gombak, Sungai Klang in Petaling, and Sungai Langat in Sepang had exceeded the danger level, showing readings of 24.44m, 12.93m and 12.98m, respectively.

In Johor, Sungai Skudai in Johor Bahru crossed its danger level of 3m, showing a reading of 3.08m.

The meteorological department earlier issued a warning of thunderstorms in Kuala Lumpur, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Pahang, Selangor, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor and Sabah.

It has also forecast bad weather until March 13, with thunderstorms expected in several areas in the western part of the peninsula, as well as Sabah and Sarawak.
