Loke elected new DAP secretary-general

He succeeds Lim Guan Eng, who steps down after 18 years, having reached the three-term limit.

Loke Siew Fook takes over as party secretary-general after having served as national organising secretary.
SHAH ALAM:
Loke Siew Fook has been elected DAP’s new secretary-general, drawing the curtains on Lim Guan Eng’s 18 years at the post.

Guan Eng, who turned 61 in December, has reached the three-term limit and was voted the party’s chairman at today’s congress at the Ideal Convention Centre here.

Party stalwart Lim Kit Siang was named the party’s mentor.

Kit Siang had earlier announced his retirement from politics after 56 years with the party. He and his son Guan Eng have held the secretary-general’s post for a total of 48 years between them.

Transition from 2G to 3G leadership

A total of 93 candidates had contested for the 30 seats in the central executive committee (CEC).

Loke, who was national organising secretary, said today’s elections represented the beginning of DAP’s 3G (third generation) leaders.

“This is a transition in leadership from 2G to 3G, although there is now 5G in telecommunications, but we will get there,” he said.

There were 2G leaders like Tan Kok Wai, Fong Kui Lun and Lim Guan Eng still in the CEC who had given room for 3G leaders such as himself, Nga Kor Ming, Liew Chin Tong, Steven Sim, Teo Nie Ching “and all the others who will be leading DAP’s challenges ahead”.

Loke said he was determined to lead the party in an inclusive manner, and that the role of the secretary-general in DAP is that of “first among equals”.

Thanking the CEC for giving him the three-year mandate to lead the party, Loke promised to deliver on leadership that would unite DAP’s members and utilise the strength of the CEC members to the best of their ability.

Kit Siang, who has been in the CEC since 1966, did not elaborate about his new role as party mentor. “You will have to ask the secretary-general about that,” he jokingly told reporters as he left the hall.
