He said this practice will not work if it is repeated at next month’s party elections as members have moved beyond that.

“This ‘cai’ (preferred list) system has never been effective because members have learned how to evaluate the candidates on their own.

“They will choose who they feel are truly qualified to hold the posts they are contesting for.

“This system will only be useful if the candidates are less known. But in the present situation, the members know all the candidates very well,” he told a press conference.

Fahmi said he would leave it to the wisdom of PKR members to choose the right candidate instead of voting based on any list being circulated.

Fahmi is among 17 PKR members who are contesting for the four vice-president’s posts in the party elections next month.

Among others contesting are Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari, the party’s Wanita chief Fuziah Salleh, Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Aminuddin Harun and former Perak PKR chief Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak.

Party organising secretary Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and PKR central leadership member Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid are also among the other prominent people vying for the posts.

Fahmi, who is Lembah Pantai MP, said he would continue to focus on strengthening the party following the Sheraton Move, which led to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government.

Secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and vice-president Rafizi Ramli will face off for the deputy president’s post.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has retained the PKR presidency for the 2022-2024 term after being returned unopposed.
