Zahid evades questions about SDs in support of Anwar

Instead, he said Tajuddin Abdul Rahman was no longer an Umno Supreme Council member.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he would let Umno’s grassroots evaluate Tajuddin Abdul Rahman’s statement for themselves.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has refused to respond to Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman’s claim that he was pushing MPs from the party to sign statutory declarations (SDs) backing Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister.

Met outside the court complex after his corruption trial, Zahid avoided questions from the media.

Instead, Zahid said Tajuddin was no longer an Umno Supreme Council member and he would leave it to Umno’s grassroots to evaluate Tajuddin’s statement.

Yesterday, Tajuddin told a press conference that he was a “living witness” to Zahid’s efforts to get Umno MPs to sign SDs to back the PKR president as prime minister.

Anwar announced in September 2020 that he had “formidable and convincing support” from MPs to form a new government, nine months after Bersatu left Pakatan Harapan to form the Perikatan Nasional-led government. However, Anwar’s move failed.

To another question of a purported May 2020 meeting at Tajuddin’s house on an attempt by senior Umno leaders to remove Zahid as party president, Zahid said he was unaware of the matter.

“I don’t know,” he replied.

Tajuddin had named Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan and former president Najib Razak as among the attendees.

Meanwhile, when asked whether Umno would take action against Tajuddin, Zahid said he would leave it to the disciplinary board.

“If they (the disciplinary board members) recommend any action to be taken, the Supreme Council will make a decision,” he said.
