PETALING JAYA:
Police have questioned former attorney-general (AG) Apandi Ali in connection with reports lodged against him alleging that he had abused his power while handling the 1MDB scandal.

“Bukit Aman’s classified investigation unit (D5) took a statement from former AG, Apandi Ali, from 2.30pm to 3.45pm,” said police secretary Noorsiah Saaduddin in a statement.

Noorsiah previously said Apandi would be investigated for allegedly disobeying a direction of law with the intent to save a person from punishment, or property from forfeiture as a public servant.

She made no mention of where the statement was taken.

The Star reported that media personnel were waiting outside Bukit Aman for Apandi since 1.30pm, with sources telling the daily that Apandi’s statement would be taken at another location.

Last week, the D5 unit said it had started an investigation into Apandi over three police reports lodged against him related to the 1MDB case.

While serving as AG in Najib Razak’s government, Apandi had cleared Najib of any wrongdoing regarding money found in his bank account.

Najib has maintained that the money was a political donation from the Saudi Arabian royal family.

Last month, a High Court judge, hearing a defamation suit involving Apandi and Lim Kit Siang, had said Apandi’s delegation to Saudi Arabia did not meet nor speak to the alleged donor despite saying otherwise at a media conference in 2016.
