PETALING JAYA:
The Election Commission (EC) has set Dec 7 for polling for the Tioman state seat in Pahang, with early voting slated for Dec 3.

EC chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh said nominations for the seat will be held on Nov 24, with 13 days of campaigning.

The new dates follow the death of Perikatan Nasional candidate Yunus Ramli early this morning.

Yunus, 61, died at the Kuala Rompin Hospital in Pahang. According to Sinar Harian, he suffered from heart complications.

The election will take place concurrently with the polls for the Padang Serai parliamentary seat in Kedah, which was postponed following the death of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate, M Karupaiya.

Candidates who were nominated previously do not have to be nominated again but will need to draw lots on Nov 24 for their new position on the ballot paper.

New candidates who wish to contest the seat will need to submit their nominations on that day.

The Elections (Conduct of Elections) Regulations 1981, Regulation 11(6) states that the EC can call for a by-election on a separate date in the event a nominated candidate dies.

Yunus had been slated to compete in a five-cornered fight for the Tioman seat against Barisan Nasional’s Johari Hussain, PH’s Fadzli Ramly, Pejuang’s Osman Bakar and independent candidate Sulaiman Bakar.
