Elderly care home shown in abuse videos not registered, says Nancy

The recordings had shown a 70-year-old resident being beaten with a stick.

Kulim police say they have arrested the owner and a helper at the home in Padang Serai after four video clips went viral on social media.
PETALING JAYA:
The welfare home shown in videos where a resident was beaten by a woman who is believed to be a staff at the centre is not registered with the social welfare department (JKM), says women, family and community development minister Nancy Shukri.

Nancy said this was based on investigations conducted by the department and the police on the private elderly care home located at Taman Desa Aman in Padang Serai, Kedah.

“Once the investigations are complete, we will order the welfare home to close.

“I urge those tasked with caring for the elderly to fulfil their responsibilities diligently. We must always remember that someday, we too will depend on others for care and protection,” she said after attending the Kuching district office Aidilfitri open house today, reported Bernama.

On Thursday, Kulim police chief Azizul Khairi said they had arrested the owner and helper of the welfare home to assist in their investigation.

The police had received a report about an incident where a 70-year-old resident of the home had allegedly been beaten with a stick.

“Four video clips of the incident have gone viral on social media. The Kulim police headquarters has launched an investigation and arrested a 44-year-old man, who is the owner of the welfare home.

“Police also arrested a 36-year-old woman who works as a helper at the centre,” he said.
