Govt looks to install CCTVs at border petrol stations

The Kelantan branch of the domestic trade and cost of living ministry says this will help to monitor smuggling activity more effectively.

CCTVs are being considered for selected petrol stations to prevent repeat fuel purchases for smuggling purposes.
KOTA BHARU:
The Kelantan branch of the domestic trade and cost of living ministry plans to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at petrol stations along the state’s Malaysia-Thailand border to more effectively monitor smuggling activity.

Branch director Azman Ismail said CCTVs would be installed at selected stations that were believed to be frequented by fuel smugglers.

He said this measure was to prevent repeat fuel purchases for smuggling purposes.

However, he said the matter was still under discussion with oil companies and had not been finalised yet.

“Enforcement officers are currently placed at several selected stations in Tumpat and Pasir Mas,” he said.

Azman said with these CCTVs, ministry officers could conduct continuous monitoring from their offices and take action quickly if needed.

“Petrol stations already have their own CCTVs but ministry officers need to go to the stations to view their footage.

“What we want is for monitoring to be done from the office,” he said.

Azman said there were 46 petrol stations near the border, within a 20km radius, that were the focus of fuel smugglers.
