Jubilation as Aaron-Wooi Yik fight back for Olympic bronze

The Malaysian pair retained their position as Olympic bronze medallists after coming from behind against Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen.

National doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik came back from the brink of defeat to retain their position as Olympic badminton bronze medallists in a thrilling encounter at the Paris 2024 Olympics today.

They conceded the first game 15-21 to Denmark’s Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, who were poised for victory at 20-16 in the second game.

However, Aaron-Wooi Yik clawed back four match points to draw level at 20-20 before surging ahead to win 22-20 to force a deciding game.

Aaron-Wooi Yik, the 2022 world champions, had started the match in jittery form and made many unforced errors to give away the first game.

Their Danish opponents opened a four-point lead at 12-8 and maintained their advantage until Aaron-Wooi Yik caught up at 18-16, before conceding the next three points to close out the game.

The rubber game was another nail-biting affair, but the exuberant Aaron-Wooi Yik, showing incredible determination, overcame the challenge from the Danes, ranked world No 2.

Aaron-Wooi Yik took a 10-6 lead at the restart and built on their lead by taking a six-point cushion at 13-7. The Danes shifted gears and managed to even the scores at 17-17 and again at 19-19 before the Malaysians saw out the match.

In the men’s doubles final, defending Olympic champions Lee Yang-Wang Chi Lin of Taiwan retained their title with a thrilling 21-17, 18-21, 21-19 victory over China’s Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang.

Malaysia have another shot at an Olympic bronze medal tomorrow when singles star Lee Zii Jia takes on India’s Lakshya Sen, after he was defeated 21-14, 21-15 by reigning world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in the semi-final earlier today.
