Soldier drowns, another missing during Royal Belum forest op

Police say the duo, along with seven others, were attempting to cross a river when they were swept away.

A soldier was found drowned during an operation in the Royal Belum forest area on Nov 29 while another is missing.

Gerik police chief Zulkifli Mahmood said they received a report about the incident at about 9am today.

“The initial investigation revealed that the incident occurred on Nov 29 at about 6pm, when the two victims, along with seven other military personnel, were attempting to cross Sungai Merah.

“The victims failed to cross the river and were swept away by the strong currents,” he said in a statement.

A search and rescue operation was conducted by the police and armed forces.

“One victim was found dead from drowning, while the other is missing. The search operation is ongoing,” he said.
