PETALING JAYA:
The study and design work for Penang’s Juru-Sungai Dua Elevated Highway project has commenced, with completion expected within a year, according to chief minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Chow said the traffic dispersal project’s physical implementation will start after the implementing agency completes the study and design phase.

“I have been informed that the allocation for the project has been provided this year, including funds for consultancy work,” Bernama quoted him as telling reporters at Menara MBSP today.

He said the project’s construction will take at least five years.

“Previously, the project was estimated to cost RM2.7 billion, but we now need to wait for an official announcement from the works ministry.

“PLUS Malaysia Bhd will likely be involved in this project, as it falls within the North-South Expressway,” he said.

The Juru-Sungai Dua Elevated Highway is one of several initiatives for Penang announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of Budget 2025 on Oct 18 last year.

The other initiatives include the Penang LRT, the expansion of Penang International Airport, and the Batu Kawan 3 Industrial Park.

Chow previously said the highway project is expected to be implemented through a public-private partnership involving PLUS, the public-private partnership unit in the Prime Minister’s Department and several related agencies currently under review.
