In a statement today, the high commission said Canada’s funding is specifically directed at helping students in flood-hit areas continue their education by alleviating the financial burden of their families.
“This initiative is part of a larger humanitarian relief effort led by MRC, supported by Canada and other corporate and international donors.
“Pooled funding will provide direct financial aid to 3,000 households in the hardest-hit districts, including Setiu, Kemaman, Hulu Terengganu, Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kubang Pasu and Alor Setar,” said the high commission.
Eligible households will receive RM350 in direct cash transfers and RM350 cash vouchers for essential household and cleaning supplies.
An extra RM200 in vouchers will be provided for families with schoolgoing children.
Community-based recovery initiatives such as mass cleaning campaigns, distribution of water filters and jerry cans as well as water treatment training will be part of the post-flood recovery programme.
