PETALING JAYA:
A Bukit Aman traffic police officer was charged in the Kuching magistrates’ court today with murder.

The Borneo Post reported that Genesis Mitchell David Reddy, 29, nodded after the charge was read to him before magistrate Sharifah Fatimah Azura Wan Alwi.

He is accused of fatally shooting Zaki Iderus, 34, at Jalan Stephen Yong on April 26.

The charge comes under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which is punishable by death, or 30 to 40 years’ imprisonment and a minimum of 12 strokes of the rotan upon conviction.

No plea was recorded as murder falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

According to a Harian Metro report, the victim was brought by two men to the Batu Kawa police station in a Perodua Myvi at 5.20am on April 26.

They claimed that their friend was hit by gunshots as they were driving through Jalan Stephen Yong in Batu Kawa.

Checks confirmed that the 34-year-old had been hit by two gunshots in the head and right arm.

Within 12 hours, police had arrested the main suspect and two of his friends who were with him in the vehicle during the incident.

They also seized a car and a gun with 10 bullets believed to belong to the suspect.

The court set June 10 for remention of the case as the prosecution has yet to receive the chemistry, ballistic, and autopsy reports.

Mitchell was represented by lawyers Russell Lim and Brendan Ting from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
