PETALING JAYA:
A male suspect in the June 24 murder of a university student in Cyberjaya is expected to be charged in the Sepang magistrates’ court soon.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said the suspect will be charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Previously, Harian Metro quoted him as saying the suspect would be charged tomorrow at the Sepang magistrates’ court at 8.30am.

However, Sepang police chief Norhizam Bahaman told reporters tonight the case had been postponed to a date yet to be set.

Police had arrested a man and two women, aged 19 and 20, around Johor Bahru, Johor, and Gemencheh, Negeri Sembilan, between 9am on June 26 and 2am on June 27 following the discovery of the body of University of Cyberjaya student Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara.

The trio were initially remanded until July 3, but the remand order was extended to July 10.

Earlier, Norhizam said all three suspects were known to Maniishapriet, who was found dead in her condominium unit by a friend.

She had been staying in the unit with five other students, but her housemates had reportedly returned to their hometowns for the holidays on June 21.

An autopsy identified her cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head.

Police said there were no signs that the unit had been broken into and that she had not suffered injuries consistent with rape.

Police previously said a male suspect had used Maniishapriet’s debit card to withdraw money from five to six ATMs not long after the murder.

A laptop, handphone and cash belonging to Maniishapriet were also said to be missing.
