PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Armed Forces has launched an internal inquiry into the case of a soldier who was severely injured in a beating at the 25th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment camp on Monday night.

The armed forces said preliminary investigations found that a non-commissioned officer had used physical force after being dissatisfied with the way the soldiers involved cleaned the weapons store.

“We take the matter seriously, and an inquiry has been convened to determine the cause of the incident,” it said in a statement.

The armed forces said firm action would be taken against parties found to be involved, and that it would not tolerate any misconduct that violates existing laws and regulations.

Bentong police yesterday arrested a 37-year-old army corporal to help in investigations following a report filed by one of the soldiers’ fathers.

District police chief Zaiham Kahar said the initial investigation found that the corporal had allegedly punched and kicked the victim in various parts of the body.

The 24-year-old is receiving treatment at Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital’s intensive care unit in Temerloh, Pahang.

Zaiham said six other victims, aged 19 to 22, were also assaulted in the incident and had been referred to Bentong Hospital to be examined for injuries.

The corporal has been remanded until April 4 for an investigation on voluntarily causing grievous hurt.

The armed forces today said the other six victims were in stable condition, with their health being closely monitored.

It urged all parties to refrain from speculation that could undermine the investigation, and to respect the privacy of the victims and their families.

It added that further updates would be provided in due course.
