Timur Laut deputy police chief Lee Swee Sake said a report was lodged at about 1.05pm.
A video of the incident has also gone viral on social media.
“The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving,” he said in a statement.
Lee said the ambulance was not carrying any patient.
A preliminary investigation found that a car driven by a 19-year-old student collided with the ambulance, which was answering an emergency call, at the traffic light junction in front of USM at about 11am.
“The impact caused the ambulance to lose control and crash into another car waiting at the traffic lights,” Lee said.
He said the ambulance driver and three assistant medical officers sustained minor injuries.
The driver of the first car was injured in her chest, ribs and waist, but the driver of the car waiting at the traffic lights escaped injury.
