Man held for allegedly insulting Selangor sultan on social media

Bukit Aman says the suspect was arrested in Bukit Mertajam after 12 police reports were lodged.

PETALING JAYA:
A man in his 30s was arrested in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, this evening over a Facebook post allegedly insulting the Selangor sultan and is being investigated for sedition.

Bukit Aman CID director M Kumar said the offending post was published by the Facebook account “Lucas Liam” on May 2. However, Kumar did not provide details of the post.

Kumar said the arrest was made with the help of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, which identified the person believed to be the account owner, after 12 police reports had been lodged across the country.

Two mobile phones and SIM cards were seized.

Kumar said police will apply to remand the suspect tomorrow. Besides sedition, police are also investigating him for insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace.
