PETALING JAYA:
The education ministry is drawing up new safety guidelines after recent school accidents highlighted the need for stronger safety measures.

The ministry said the updated guidelines are being developed with input from its Educational Institutions Safety Reform Committee and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.

“All school administrators are reminded to continuously emphasise safety in the use of vehicles within school premises,” it said in a statement.

“Schools must remain the safest environment for students, teachers and all members of the school community.”

Last month, a Form 1 student was killed and another injured when a car driven by a teacher hit them in their school compound in Kota Bharu.

Yesterday, a Year 2 pupil died after a van crashed into her at the entrance of a school in Batu Pahat, Johor. The van was exiting the school gate after delivering some goods at the time.

The Johor government today announced plans to set up a special task force to strengthen school safety following the incident.

In a Sinar Harian report, state education and information committee chairman Aznan Tamin said the task force would ensure stricter compliance with safety guidelines, including regular risk assessments and improved traffic control in school areas.
