Teen pleads not guilty to dangerous driving causing cyclist’s death

PETALING JAYA:
A teenager pleaded not guilty in the magistrates’ court in Kuching, Sarawak, today to a charge of dangerous driving causing the death of a cyclist on May 1.

Elijah Jeremiah Yeo, 19, entered his plea before magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali, Bernama reported.

He was accused of driving dangerously and colliding with a cyclist, causing his death, at Jalan Stutong in Kuching at 5.30am.

The charge was brought under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for five to 10 years’ imprisonment, as well as a maximum fine of RM50,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence for no less than five years, upon conviction.

The court allowed Yeo to be released on bail of RM20,000 with two sureties, and set June 5 for case management.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Fillanny Siji, while Yeo was represented by lawyer Daniel Ling.

Kuching police chief Alexson Naga Chabu had said a report was received at about 5.45am, stating that a 56-year-old man had sustained severe head injuries in an accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.
