Speculation over the dissolution of the Johor state assembly recently intensified, with several politicians making public statements about a state election and others laying claim to seats.
Onn Hafiz told the Johor state assembly today that matters relating to the state election should be set aside for now, and urged state assemblymen to continue serving the people of Johor, Bernama reported.
“I’ve noticed some differences during this assembly debate session, perhaps because the political temperature is rising,” he said during his winding-up speech at the state assembly sitting in Kota Iskandar.
“Some have said this might be the last state assembly sitting before the state election… I would like to announce that the Johor state legislative assembly will not be dissolved today, so everyone can relax.
“I advise the honourable members not to worry about the state election. Continue serving the people and Bangsa Johor. Let us put aside election matters for now as there are still many programmes and initiatives that need to be implemented,” he told the 56-member assembly.
The Johor state assembly will automatically dissolve in April next year, after which a state election must be held within 60 days.
Barisan Nasional formed the state government after winning 40 of the 56 seats contested in the last Johor election in March 2022.
Pakatan Harapan won 12 seats while Perikatan Nasional secured three seats and Muda, one.
