PETALING JAYA:
A retired civil servant and former clerk was proclaimed the 11th Datuk Klana Petra Undang of Luak Sungei Ujong, in the latest development in the state’s ongoing customary and constitutional conflict.

Abd Rahman Limat, 70, was proclaimed the 11th Undang of Sungei Ujong during a customary ceremony in Rasah after receiving the endorsement of the Ibu Soko, Buapak and Tiang Balai of the Perut Waris Hulu lineage, the New Straits Times reported.

Rahman, who holds the customary title of Datuk Juan Waris Perut in Hulu Luak Sungei Ujong, is understood to be from the Biduanda Waris Klana clan. His highest academic qualification is the Lower Certificate of Education.

He had reportedly submitted his candidacy for the post on Nov 13, 2004.

Today’s ceremony comes in the wake of the announcement on May 5 of Faris Johari as the 11th Undang of Luak Sungei Ujong, replacing Mubarak Dohak.

A statement posted by adat council of Sungei Ujong on Facebook said Faris was installed on April 22, in a ceremony witnessed by adat leaders, clan representatives, and government officials. He was selected by consensus among the adat leaders of Luak Sungei Ujong.

However, Faris’s appointment was later disputed and alleged to be inconsistent with Sungei Ujong customary procedures. The Datuk-Datuk Lembaga Adat Sungei Ujong said the appointment of the undang required unanimous consent from the clan leaders.

The development comes amid a crisis sparked by the removal of Mubarak as undang of Sungei Ujong which led the three other undangs to declare the removal of Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as Yang di-Pertuan Besar.

However, the state government rejected the declaration.
