PETALING JAYA:
The Johor state assembly will convene for just one day on June 22, sparking speculation that the legislature will be dissolved to pave the way for a snap election.

DAP’s Johor Jaya assemblyman Liow Cai Tung said she received a notice on the sitting today and that there would be no question-and-answer session.

She also said this meant the state assembly would be holding meetings two months in a row, having already convened earlier this month, adding that this was unprecedented.

“Actually, the state assembly can be dissolved without calling for a sitting.

“If it’s not to announce the Johor assembly’s dissolution, then what will be on the agenda for this upcoming sitting? Let’s guess and see,” the three-term assemblyman said in a Facebook post.

The Johor assembly will dissolve automatically in April next year if elections are not called earlier, with polls required within 60 days of dissolution.

Barisan Nasional formed the Johor government after winning 40 of the 56 seats in the 2022 state election. Pakatan Harapan won 12 seats while Perikatan Nasional secured three and Muda one.

Johor BN has announced its intention to go solo in the state polls, drawing protests from PH over their unity pact.

PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim had said he would meet his BN counterpart, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, to hold “harmonious” talks on the Johor election.
