PETALING JAYA:
Johor Barisan Nasional will hold a convention on June 14 to strengthen the coalition’s unity at the state level, state chairman Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced, weeks after an outcry caused by Johor BN’s plans to contest all state assembly seats at the next elections.

He said the decision to hold the convention was made at a state BN meeting today which was held to refine strategies and strengthen cooperation among the coalition’s component parties.

“The meeting also outlined a more structured approach to ensure that the Maju Johor agenda continues to move forward for the wellbeing of the rakyat and the overall development of the state,” he said in a statement quoted by Bernama.

Johor BN holds 40 seats in the 56-member state assembly through Umno (33 seats), MCA (4) and MIC (3).

Onn Hafiz said Johor BN is committed to strengthening cooperation with the People’s Progressive Party, which recently returned to BN.

On May 16, Onn Hafiz announced that BN would contest all 56 state assembly seats at the next Johor state election.

His announcement caused an outcry among members of Pakatan Harapan, which holds 12 seats through DAP (10), PKR (1) and Amanah (1). In contrast to the federal unity government coalition, PH is not part of the state government, but offers voting support. The opposition is formed by Bersatu (2) and PAS (1) as members of Perikatan Nasional, and Muda (1).
