Baru: Sabah Christian Minister ‘insulting’ Lun Bawang

The churches in Sarawak have been neglected by Barisan Nasional (BN) for decades and for them to be so generous suddenly with only promises shows their insincerity.

LAWAS: The voters of Ba’ Kelalan and the rest of Sarawak must make a strong stand on Saturday against the “underhanded tactics” of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) government, urged Sarawak Opposition Chief Baru Bian in a last minute plea. “Continue to vote PKR for a better government.”

“The BN Sarawak enticing the Church with money is sacrilegious.”

BN hit a new low with the latest promise of money for the churches in Ba’ Kelalan two days before polling day, he charged in a statement. “They will stoop to the lowest level to get votes from the Lun Bawang community.”

He alleged that a Christian Minister from Sabah (Maximus Jonity Ongkili) who was sent to “perform this heinous act (promising money) should be thoroughly ashamed for allowing himself to be used as a tool by BN”.

Since the BN wants to influence Christians, demanded Baru, the Minister should explain why their Malay-speaking Christian brothers and sisters in Peninsula Malaysia were not allowed to use the word “Allah”.

“He should also explain why the Jill Ireland case dragged on for so long, not to mention the confiscation of Christian educational material at Kuching Port and at the low cost terminal in Subang not so long ago.”

Instead, lamented Baru, the Christian Minister from Sabah was throwing money promises at the people to “insult” their intelligence.

The churches have been neglected by BN for decades and for them to be so generous suddenly with only promises of money shows their “insincerity”, cried Baru. “Christians in Ba’ Kelalan should be steadfast and hold on to their integrity and pride.”

“Our votes are sacred. The BN must not be allowed to defile our churches by their cheap attempt at vote-buying.”

The Opposition Chief feels that the “unsavoury act” by the BN proves one thing: voting for the Opposition sends a message to BN that the voters are waking up to their “empty promises”.

Voting for the Opposition wakes the BN up to the neglect the people have been suffering for so long, he continued. “Voting for the Opposition ensures that the BN will pay more attention to the people’s grouses.”

“The Sarawak Government should finally consider the basic amenities that should have been provided years ago.”
