KUALA LUMPUR:
Police have questioned a member of the secretariat for the “Love Malaysia, End Kleptocracy” forum in July on whether Dr Mahathir Mohamad had maligned the Bugis community in his speech at the event.

Petaling Jaya city councillor Lim Yi Wei said she was called in for questioning today over Mahathir’s speech at the July 17 forum at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) Shah Alam.

“Apparently someone had made a report against Mahathir, saying that he had maligned the Bugis community in his speech at the forum.

“Some of the questions the police asked were quite basic, who were the organisers and the attendees.

“They asked a lot about the Bugis angle,” Lim told reporters outside the Shah Alam district police headquarters here yesterday.

Mahathir, who is Pakatan Harapan chairman, had come under fire recently for allegedly insulting Najib’s Indonesian ancestry by comparing him to Bugis pirates in two political speeches last month.

The Selangor Royal Council had called for Mahathir to be investigated under the Sedition Act or any other appropriate law over his remark about the Bugis.

On Tuesday, Indonesian Vice-President Jusuf Kalla had demanded Mahathir apologise for his comments, saying the opposition leader had insulted the Bugis community in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Mahathir has remained steadfast that he never insulted the Bugis or Jusuf Kalla. He maintained that he had only referred to Prime Minister Najib Razak, not the entire community.

Selangor police chief Mazlan Mansor said investigation papers had been opened on the complaints against Mahathir.

Lim said the timing of the police questioning her was rather suspicious as the forum took place four months ago.

“It sounds quite made up, at the back of the recent allegations against Mahathir about maligning the Bugis community,” she said.

Meanwhile, Lim said that it was not clearly stated under what section she was being investigated but she believed she was called in only as a witness in this case.

Lim has also been questioned by the police over her involvement in organising the “Love Malaysia, End Kleptocracy” rally at the Padang Timur in Petaling Jaya on Oct 14. She may be charged with contravening the Peaceful Assembly Act.
