Zahid faces arrest ahead of another session with MACC

Umno members urged to show solidarity with their president amid intense speculation of arrest.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been summoned to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) tomorrow, amid intense speculation that the former deputy prime minister will be arrested.

Vocal Umno leader Lokman Noor Adam has urged members to gather at the MACC building in Putrajaya tomorrow night as a mark of solidarity.

“Let us come to the defence of our president who is now a target of the cruel Mahathir-DAP regime. Do not let our president stand alone.

“Sacrifice only one day to defend the dignity of Umno that is now being torn apart by the government,” said Lokman in a message to party members.

Lokman added that Zahid was expected to be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on Friday.

On Oct 12, Zahid was questioned for the fifth time by MACC for nearly 11 hours.

He was called in over allegations of abuse of funds from his family-run foundation, Yayasan Akal Budi.

Zahid was grilled by anti-graft officials for nearly nine hours the day before.

Zahid, who is chairman of the foundation, told MACC in July that RM800,000 had been reimbursed to the foundation two years ago.

He blamed an employee for making a mistake in issuing a cheque from the foundation to pay for his credit card bills, saying he had earlier instructed the employee to prepare the payment from his personal bank account.

He was also questioned that month over an alleged meeting with a member of Saudi Arabia’s royal family in 2015, who is said to have donated money to former prime minister Najib Razak.
