Headless body found as search for Penang landslide victims continues

The victim could have been crushed by a boulder causing the head and limbs to be severed from the body.

The body of the seventh victim in the landslide at Jalan Bukit Kukus, Paya Terubong here was found with his body separated from the head, buried under 10 metres of earth.

The body of Md Abdul Jalil, 34, was found at 4.50pm with both his arms missing.

Northeast District police chief Che Zaimani Che Awang said Jalil’s body was identified by his colleagues based on a webbed toe on his left leg.

“Police believe the victim could have been crushed by a boulder in the incident which caused the head and limbs to be severed from the body,” he told reporters at the site of the tragedy.

Since Friday, seven bodies have been found. The search continues for three more victims who are feared killed in the landslide.

Che Zaimani said the three are Indonesian worker Subairi, and two Bangladeshis Ujal and Rahat.

The landslide occured at the construction site of the paired highway project in Bukit Kukus on Friday.

Three Indonesian women and one Bangladeshi man were injured. One of the Indonesians, Laduma, who was discharged from hospital, is assisting search and rescue workers with information about the location.

Che Zaimani said the search and rescue operation would continue tonight after discussions with the Fire and Rescue Department and the Mineral and Geoscience Department.

“The land here is found safe for search and rescue operations to continue looking for victims,” he said.

Meanwhile, Che Zaimani said the seven foreign workers killed in the incident did not have work permits.
