MACC arrests ex-Johor MP over RM230,000 bribe

Sources claim former lawmaker allegedly used his position to propose and approve the appointment of a printing company to publish a newsletter in a contract worth RM13 million.

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today arrested a former Johor MP with a “Datuk” title for allegedly taking a RM50,000 bribe and receiving a piece of land worth RM180,000.

He was arrested at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya at 12.40am today and will be charged at the Johor Bahru Sessions Court tomorrow, according to sources.

It is understood that the 56-year-old “Datuk” sat on the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) board of directors previously and allegedly used his position to propose and approve the appointment of a printing company.

This company, in which the “Datuk” is said to have an interest, was involved in publishing the 1Suara newsletter from 2012 to 2015. This project is believed to be valued at more than RM13 million.

“In return, in 2012, he received RM50,000.

“In 2014, he also received a piece of land at Mukim Kota Tinggi, Johor, worth about RM180,000,” the source claimed.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Azam Baki confirmed the arrest and said the “Datuk” will face two charges under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which involves using one’s position to obtain gratification.
